We know we wouldn’t be here, doing what we do each day at NPPD, without our customers. You’re the reason our organization exists, and everything we do is focused on making your experience better, your electricity more reliable, and your rates as affordable as possible.
As our state grows, so do energy needs. More homes, more businesses, and more technology mean more demand for power. We’re in an exciting moment right now because we’re seeing substantial growth across Nebraska. With that growth comes the need to plan ahead, and to do it wisely.
That’s exactly what we’re doing.
We’ve been working with our wholesale customers for several years now on something big: a new, long-term wholesale power contract. This agreement will help us fund the next generation of energy resources, ensuring reliable power for decades to come. More importantly, this contract was created with our customers, not just for them. Why? Because they know their own end-user needs and desires well, and they’re advocating for them just as much as we are for our own customers.
For the past two years, we have spent hours upon hours in conversation with customers across our service area. We listened to concerns, looked at the numbers together, and worked to build a contract that’s beneficial for everyone. It supports growing energy needs while keeping rates competitive and service reliable. That’s the public power model at its best: local, customer-focused, and built on trust.
We continue to get asked if we’re running out of electricity. The short answer? Absolutely not. In fact, we have more than enough generating capacity to meet existing in-state energy demand. But as we look at load growth projects across the state and in many of our customers’ service territories, we’re also smart about preparing for what’s ahead. As we wait for new generation projects to come on-line, we’re using short-term capacity purchase agreements to make sure we have enough reserve power for peak usage times, such as the hottest of summer days and coldest of winter storms.
We’re also focused on making sure we have the right mix of energy resources. That includes nuclear, low-sulfur coal, oil, gas, wind, solar, and hydro. A diverse energy mix means we can quickly adapt to changing conditions, whether it’s the market, fuel prices, or new regulations, and always keep your power flowing.
To guide us, we use tools like our Integrated Resource Plan. This long-term plan looks five to 30 years into the future and helps us decide what kinds of energy resources we’ll need and when. Meanwhile, our six-year rate outlook provides a nearer-term snapshot of financial performance and rate trends and is updated yearly, though we’re always keeping a close eye on financials. These are just two of the ways we make thoughtful, strategic decisions that protect you from big surprises later on.
At the end of the day, our vision is simple: to bring our customers the very best of public power. That means great service, smart planning, and a real commitment to doing what’s right for everyone, and for Nebraska’s future.
We appreciate your trust and support as we move forward, together. You’re the reason we do what we do, and we’re proud to be powering everyday life and a better tomorrow.
