Restoring service when Mother Nature wreaks havoc is one way NPPD is “Always there when you need us.” Having the necessary equipment, vehicles and engineering resources at the ready saves time. Operations centers in York and Norfolk house various quantities of conductor, power poles, insulators, etc. needed for both routine maintenance operations and outages. The location of these facilities offers quick access and the personnel support needed to deliver reliable customer service.
Provides engineering, and construction support for NPPD's transmission and distribution crews, telecommunications, and transportation operations, including fleet, equipment and inventory supply.
42,000 sq. ft. for vehicle and equipment storage and 45,000 sq. ft. for work space to house operations and customer service. This facility was designed and built to meet Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification standards.
Operators at NPPD’s control centers monitor the flow of electricity within the state’s electric system through electronic devices located at the generating plants, substations and power lines. The control centers can relay messages to power plants to either increase or decrease their generation, thereby matching the amount of electricity needed at any given moment to the most economical generation source available.
In addition to controlling generation, the control centers scan the electric system every two seconds to ensure that electricity has a reliable path from the generating stations to the customers. For example, if a line would malfunction because of a storm, operators would immediately reroute power to the destination. Our control centers enable us to deliver around-the-clock, reliable power to our customers.
NPPD operates an intricate network of irrigation canals, dams and reservoirs along a 150-mile stretch of the Nebraska Platte River System. This water system delivers supplemental irrigation to more than 75,000 acres in central Nebraska, adding millions of dollars annually to the value of crops in the Platte Valley.
The system also stores and delivers water to hydroelectric plants and Gerald Gentleman Station, the largest coal-fired electric power generation facility in Nebraska.
